Q's "Stereo Driver" Is a Nostalgic, Intergalactic Venture

With a dash of ‘80s synth-wave, rising R&B artist Q’s latest single “Stereo Driver” is an experiment with sound and dimension.

A 23-year-old Broward County native, Q’s voice out-ages him, as if it has lived more lives than he himself. This helps to build a sound stunningly intergalactic, earning him support from Columbia Records after two independently released projects.

Following his 2020 breakout album The Shave Experiment, this single is a clear indication that the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist intends to stay devoted to making boundless music, challenging the dilution of time and genre. His music is elastic, walking the path that icons like Prince and Lenny Kravitz paved.

It’s easy to get lost in a kaleidoscope of Q’s sound, as “Stereo Driver” asks your soul to ease on the chase and rest in the knowledge that there’s something more. The single is accompanied by a stunning visual, complete with interplanetary travel and rhinestoned jumpers. As lost individuals of varying colors and expressions begin to see themselves in each other, they’re encompassed by a sense of safety and belonging. Love and unity is the fabric of the universe, and Q has found a way to bottle that truth in sound.

As time moves forward, it’s becoming even more important that Black creatives stand proudly in their varying identities, and artists like Steve Lacy, Dijon, and now Q are crucial for the Black boys that aren’t sure if it’s safe to step outside drawn lines. As they exemplify liberation, it’s ecstasy to watch them moonwalk across every boundary in their paths.
