Montell Fish Explores the Emotional Impact of Lingering Spirits in 'Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost'
Halloween is around the corner, but nothing is haunting us more than the new Montell Fish EP, Her Love Still Haunts Me Like A Ghost. The seven-track project serves as a ghostly link between two albums, Fish's critically-lauded JAMIE and the upcoming full-length album, CHARLOTTE.
As a bridge between the projects, with JAMIE being more centered around denial and isolation whereas CHARLOTTE tackles feelings of unresolved anger, Her Love Still Haunts Me Like A Ghost explores the evolving, complicated emotions between the two.
Heralded by the standout single "Hotel," the project reveals a new production style for Fish as he adds layers of experimental instrumentation and production to his already emotionally engrossing soundscapes. You’ll surprisingly hear plenty of uptempo moments of rumination throughout the EP along with more colorful synth work that serves to highlight Fish's soulful pleas.
Speaking about the title of the EP, Fish tells us, “Even after the relationship was there, it can still haunt you. Let’s say you wanted to start another relationship, but in the back of your mind there’s always like, ‘but, what if it ends up like that.’ It’s like haunting you. It’s very hard to let go.”
Her Love Still Haunts Me Like A Ghost acts as a prequel to CHARLOTTE. “I also want to show to people throughout this whole thing that it is unhealthy to hold onto love for that long. I think at least my intention for this next project, CHARLOTTE, is to show people it gets really dark whenever you hold on for too long. It’s hard man—it’s weird cause I don’t want to ruin the story by telling people that it’s all fake, like cause it’s not all fake. It’s actually what I’m processing. But, a lot of my fanbase has their own comments about what I should do about it. I don’t know. I’m just trying to keep my head down and keep working and I think that’s working for a greater cause.”
Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost was released October 28, just three days before Halloween. In regards to the coincidental theme, Fish states, “I think there’s a childlike aspect to it as well. The character that I have named for it is called 'ghostboi,' and it’s almost so on the nose that it takes away the element of pure horror.”
Fish’s 11-date sold-out US tour, 'A Night With A Ghost Tour,' kicks off alongside the release of the project, featuring support from Lani Rose.
