Montell Fish and dj gummy bear Create a Short But Inescapable Atmosphere in "2 seater"

Since first emerging into the apparatus of mainstream attention with his 2022 single "Fall in Love with You," Montell Fish has never looked back, consistently evolving his sonic palette in tandem with his growth as a young artist. While the content on JAMIE was en masse a blend of deeply personal, laconic, and primarily ambivalent songwriting, it is apparent Fish is ready to ascend to new heights. With this latest release, he partners up with the mysterious ‘dj gummy bear’ to craft a chaotic and fiery ballad that miraculously still retains Montell’s blissful voice within the embers, shepherding the listener with a personal narrative of emotional trauma and unrequited love.
The way "2 seater" is constructed, utilizing the concept of the song's namesake, I couldn’t help but think about Tracy Chapman’s magnum opus “Fast Car.” By utilizing the concept of a ‘2 seater,’ Fish unfurls the fauna that becomes entangled when one is in a toxic relationship. With his dreamy falsetto's pitted against the most angst-ridden, distorted low-end I've heard in recent memory, the symbiotic chemistry between Fish and dj gummy bear is reminiscent of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. Culminating with the song's last verse, Montell finds himself liberating himself from this spell. Though only 1:05 in length, the song has an uncanny cinematic quality to it, one that never waves from start to finish.
According to the looping visual for "2 seater" on Montell Fish’s YouTube account, the single is part of a forthcoming project called purgatory mix. Selfishly speaking, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Montell Fish. I hope he continues his impetus of pushing the boundaries. As a fan of music first and foremost, one of my deepest pleasures is watching artists grow and transcend to new plateaus of creativity and inspiration. Nothing is more exciting than watching an artist actively Houdini out of their own box in real-time—their best work continually awaiting them just beyond that next, grand escape act.
