We may only be a few months in, but Tierra Whack is already an early contender for 2019's most memorable hip-hop drop. Proclaiming a new month in her honor, the perfectly-named #whackhistorymonth, Whack has dropped remarkable track after track, week after week. This week is no exception, as Whack welcomes us to the "Wasteland."

"Wasteland" sees the Philadelphia rapper highlighting what may come to be a defining staple of her sound, trading diverse verses with herself. The way in which Whack shifts from delivering bars to empathic crooning, all of which carry an ineffable sense of buoyancy, is something worth praise no matter how many times we hear it. It allows for Whack to not only set herself apart from the pack, but establishes her as a one-woman driving force capable of delivering a track whose range is unmatched. This is a song in defiance of its name, presenting a veritable sonic playground for the Philadelphia rapper to explore her distinctive approach to the genre.

Kicking off #whackhistory month with "Only Child," which was followed by "Gloria" and "CLONES," the unconventional rollout strategy evokes comparisons to the Philadelphia rapper's even more unconventional album drop of 2018's Whack World. The 2018 project consisted of 15 one-minute offerings all accompanied by their own music videos and would go on to net Whack her first, of what ought to be many, GRAMMY nominations. With whackhistorymonth showing no signs of stopping any time soon, we are certainly more than happy to welcome this newfound national celebration of one of hip-hop's future greats.
