Lose Yourself in Softcult’s Dreamy New Single “Love Song”
Softcultâs new single, âLove Song,â is both heavy and delicateâall indigo hues of nostalgia and dreamy lovesick glimmers intertwining.
My first listen to the chorus of "Love Song" hit me like a sucker punch to the gut. Softcult has a talent for creating sonic atmospheres that are ethereal, but âLove Songâ is especially panoramic. All at once, youâre simultaneously drowning in distorted guitar chords and soaring through lustrous synth tones as the sound fills in all the places you hadnât known you were empty before. Thereâs an anxious quality that coexists with the romanticism of the lyrics â like the hollowness that sets in during the end credits of your favorite movie; the bittersweet drive home alone after a perfect day. âLove Songâ mourns a memory, and Softcult does it with a smile, using lush layers of reverb to lay the yearning on thick.
âA slow dance in your living room / Itâs the moments I hold onto / Something to remember when I'm too delusional...,â sings the duo.
The accompanying music video, directed by lead singer Mercedes Arn-Horn, further immerses us in this shoegaze landscape. Staging dreamlike, jewel-hued visuals in a mundane bingo hall, Softcult allows listeners to witness the symbiotic relationship of love and anxiety that âLove Songâ embodies.
This new single is another step toward the dreamy duoâs upcoming EP, see you in the dark, set to release March 24.
