Ralphie Choo's 'Supernova' Is an Explosion of Uninhibited Inspiration

Madrid’s very own Ralphie Choo is making an ambitious international crossover with his debut album SUPERNOVA, an explosive project featuring support from acts like the UK’s Mura Masa and the one and only Paris Texas.

Integrating elements of trap, cumbia, electronic, and traditional flamenco, in an industry in which everything has already been done, Choo takes bits of it all to regurgitate something new. SUPERNOVA doesn’t sound like anything else out right now, though it’s an extension of the artist, who doesn’t sound like anyone else out right now.

We meet every edge of Choo’s shapeshifting on this eclectic project, tilting heads as we try to get him in focus. “WHIPCREAM,” featuring booming hip-hop duo Paris Texas, is a snare-heavy rap track that showcases lyrical versatility, while “BESO BRUMA” arrives as a flamenco-influenced ode to his cobblestone roots.

Not growing up very influenced by the mainstream, Choo's marination in traditional music gave him an appreciation for the art more than the sensation. It’s evident he’s having fun exploring himself through different turned corners, which is felt in the versatility of his work. You’re always anticipating something brand new to happen at the turn of a verse.

We close the project with “METAVERSE,” a euphoric set of keys and strings that give hope to the promise of original thought. If we continue to chase our truth rather than what’s safe, innovation is imminent, and the right ears and eyes will follow.

If SUPERNOVA makes one thing clear, it’s this: Ralphie Choo is free, never standing still long enough for you to quite capture his image. The Spanish artist is never really here, never really there, but always a little bit everywhere.
