merci, mercy's "Black Cloud" Has an Infectious Silver Lining

The latest single from Sydney-based alt-pop artist merci, mercy is anything but a "Black Cloud," and ironically enough could end up being your song of the summer. Coming after the March release of her electric track "Sick To My Stomach" and her debut EP no thank you, no thanks in 2020, "Black Cloud" sees merci, mercy open up about her journey with relationships, mental health, and finding balance while navigating the complicated world as a young adult.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, merci, mercy says she was learning how to properly handle a relationship while dealing with mental health issues, revealing “...I am working on myself to make the relationship successful, despite being wrapped in a black cloud. I’m willing to do the work because of how much I love this person; life would be a tragedy if I didn't at least try.”

The cutting lyrics, written in collaboration with Chris Collins, tell the same story, with the chorus repeating “I’m too far into this / Don’t think I would forgive myself / If I ended it, It would be a tragedy.” Being brutally honest with her audience is nothing new for merci, mercy, who is accustomed to singing over alternative-leaning, danceable beats all while being vulnerable about fluctuating relationships and other deeply personal facets of her life. While the lyrics and story could opt for a more downtrodden approach, merci, mercy has a talent for sharing her struggles and experiences through exciting and unstoppable sonic experiences that make these relatable, consuming emotions a little easier to process.
