11 Questions With Bekah Bossard on Their Sophomore Single “Four Walls"
A Morrissey adjacent voice isnât common and not meant for every mood, but on a rainy day, it pairs better than an umbrella, a weathered sonic gesture that makes you feel... well, feels. Newcomer Bekah Bossard has all the qualities of an artist who drank poetry from the river and made us relentlessly curious about what, if anything, makes this London-based artist get out of bed. We reached out to Bossard to ask them 11 questions about their latest single, "Four Walls," and more.
Ones To Watch: Who is Bekah Bossard?
Bekah Bossard: a big question!!! iâll try not to get too existential haha hmm well iâm an artist and songwriter (and a taurus if ur into astrology)
Whatâs "Four Walls" all about?
itâs honestly about being too depressed and anxious to get out of bed. i wrote it when i think all i could manage was moving to the sofa. yep, itâs as fun as it sounds! even though it was miserable, i had my best friend with me every day getting me through, so this one is also for them. a small thank you for all their love.
Always challenging to release your first music, how has it been so far?
it is!!!! iâve invested in a lot of cbd haha. itâs honestly triggered a lot of anxietyâfear of failure or just sheer embarrassment, but itâs also given me so much purpose and fulfilment. if i could spend forever writing recording and sharing my music, iâd be so happy. a dream groundhog day.
Any collaborators on the track? Who produced it?
Ellie Mason of Vodka Gentle produced it! we actually recorded it in my flat, which is very fitting for the song haha. sheâs super talented and works in a fancy studio but has done me massive favours as im just starting out with zero budget. i think a highlight was recording vocals into a cave of duvets we made together haha.
Howâd you settle into your style? Any pivotal influences?
oh my god so many influences, im spoiled!!! i grew up listening to james taylor and joni mitchell, so being fed that poetry from such a young age was a real gift (thanks dad). i also from about the age of 12 have been a die-hard swiftie haha ! sonically, i owe a lot to girl in red, and as far as queer representation goes, i have to thank her too. sheâs inspired me on so many levels.
Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming EP?
absolutely. iâve got some more of this coming your way! i also tap into a softer ambient side. so whether you want to sing (scream) while driving or cry in bed, i got you. and yes an EP is on the horizon! yay
Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?
iâm actually going on my first ever tour!!!!!? ten tonnes is taking me with them on their UK tour this september. itâs a huge milestone for me, i canât wait to connect with more people through my music
What's inspiring you right now outside of music?
ive always felt inspired by nature, so i try to take myself outside the city to reconnect with it as often as i can. the world around us is always creating and patient with itself and reminds me to navigate life in that way too.
Venue youâd most like to play in the next couple of years?
oh my god so many! probably lafayette in london, i went to see my friend sabrina (pretty sick) play there a few weeks ago and also my celebrity crush lol maya hawke recently, so itâs just become a bucket list spot super quickly for me!
Musically, who is new but making all the right moves?
boyish!!!!! they ARE the moment.
Who are your Ones To Watch?
searows. oh my god, iâve listened to nothing but their debut album for weeks now itâs gotten me through a lot of sad days. theyâre a fucking genius.
